About Coats with Care

Hello and welcome! My name is Alice, and I'm the owner and founder of Coats with Care, a home based dog grooming studio located in Eltham, offering appointment based, one-on-one sessions.

I hold a Certificate III in Animal Care, specialising in dog grooming, and have completed a year studying Veterinary Technology at the University of Queensland. Over the past two years I've worked as an experienced bather at a beautiful dog grooming salon in Thornbury, strengthening my practical experience and developing a deeper understanding of canine care.

I'm often asked what inspired me to start my business. For me, it came from a genuine understanding that every dog is different, with their own individual needs, personality and comfort levels. In busy salon environments, it can sometimes be difficult to dedicate enough time and attention to each dog's specific requirements. That is why it was so important to me I create a quiet, calm, one-on-one environment where I can give every pup the patience, care and individual attention they deserve.

I have always had a genuine love for animals and a deep passion for their welfare. I understand that your dog is not just a pet, but a valued member of the family. Whether they love visiting the groomer or feel a little unsure, regular grooming is essential for many dogs, and therefore, I believe feeling safe, comfortable and cared for throughout their experience shouldn't be a luxury, but a necessity.

I welcome dogs of all sizes, breeds and ages, and aim to give every owner peace of mind knowing their pup is being treated with patience, kindness and care. Thank you for trusting me with your furry family members. I can't wait to meet you and your pups soon!

Additional Charges

Excessive Matting

+$10 - $50

Pricing at the groomer's discretion

Although we always aim to meet the owners' requests, the dog's health and wellbeing is the main priority. In most cases, severe matting needs to be clipped out, leaving the hair length shorter in the affected areas. This means that a longer coat length may not be possible for this visit. We are always happy to demonstrate or provide advice on how to best maintain your dog's coat between visits.

Heavy Coat Compaction

+$10 - $50

Pricing at the groomer's discretion

Regular brushing at home between grooms is essential to prevent heavy and double coats from becoming compacted. In many severe cases, the compaction will need to be clipped out, leaving the hair length shorter in those affected areas. This can make the grooming process more time-consuming, and may affect the overall finish of the groom. We are always happy to demonstrate or provide advice on how to best maintain your dog's coat between visits.

Common Questions

How do I know which size category my dog is?

This will be confirmed at the groomer's discretion, but as a general guide, small is typically under 10kg, medium is 10 to 25kg, and large is over 25kg.

Why do some large-dog prices show a range?

Large dog pricing may vary depending on your dog's size, additional handling needs, and the time required to complete the groom.

How often should my dog be groomed?

This depends on lifestyle and personal preference. Generally, we suggest full grooms every 8 weeks, with a wash and tidy in between if needed. Double-coated breeds may need seasonal de-shedding, or for more regular maintenance, we suggest every 10 to 12 weeks.

Does my dog still need a groom in the colder months?

Yes! Regular grooming remains important for your dog's health, comfort and wellbeing. If you would prefer to keep their coat a bit longer during winter, we would be very happy to try a longer blade or provide a wash and tidy. However, delaying appointments can lead to excessive matting, overgrown nails, trapped dirt, skin irritation and general discomfort.

What if my dog's coat is matted?

If your dog has excessive matting, we'll aim to achieve your requests with your dog's health and wellbeing as the first priority. Severe matting may need to be clipped out, leaving the hair shorter in the affected areas. However, we will always aim to inform you first if this is the case. Additional matting fees may apply based on the severity of the case.

How does drop off and pick up work?

New clients will receive the address prior to their first appointment. Please ensure you drop your dog off with a lead, and enter via the right-hand side of the house. Let us know of any areas of concern you may have for your dog so we can attend to their needs.

Once your dog's groom is complete, you'll receive a "ready for collection" text or phone call, of which I kindly ask that you pick up your dog no longer than 30 minutes after the text has been sent, unless previous arrangements have been made. Once you arrive, come around to the drop off and pick up point.

What payment methods do you accept?

Please note at the current time we only take cash or direct bank transfer.

What if my dog is anxious or reactive?

Every session is one-on-one and paced to keep stress low, so let us know about any worries in your booking notes. For everyone's wellbeing, Coats with Care reserves the right to refuse any service, or stop mid-service if a dog poses a threat to itself or staff. In that case, the customer will be charged for the services completed.

What Our Customers Say

Kind words from the pups (and their people) we've had the pleasure of grooming.

“Alice was so gentle and patient with Milo, who's normally terrified of the groomer. He came home looking gorgeous and, more importantly, happy and relaxed. We won't go anywhere else now.”

Sarah M.

Milo · Cavoodle

“Our golden retriever sheds like crazy and the double coat de-shed made an unbelievable difference. You can tell Alice genuinely loves what she does. Booking was easy and communication was great.”

James T.

Bella · Golden Retriever

“Took our new puppy for her first groom and the whole experience was so calm and positive. Alice took her time, explained everything, and Daisy came out with the cutest little trim. Highly recommend!”
